The Eastern States Exposition (the Big E), in West Springfield, Mass., is New England's largest fair, which means you'll have more than a "fair time!"
A beloved, joyous, rather loud and traditional autumn New England event, the Big E will run this year from Sept. 12-28. We have been making the 90-minute trek for many years, given its high fun quotient, including entertainment, rides, arcade games, the best junk food on earth from myriad vendors (love the mini donut holes, fried dough, and gyros and london broil dinners!), New England history exhibits, animals, shopping, parades and just about everything else under the sun considered good, wholesome, family fun. The Avenue of the States is a must-see -- a walking tour of New England with amazing replicas of each New England state's original statehouse sitting on land owned by that state! Once inside, you'll witness "sights, sounds and tastes and of quintessential New England." That could mean blueberry pie and lobster in Maine, cheddar cheese and maple syrup in Vermont, clam chowder in Massachusetts, and on and on...
This year's musical entertainment includes country band Sugarland, country singer LeAnn Rimes, former Monkee Mickey Dolenz and a great bast from the disco era, A Taste of Honey. Other fun includes an Irish exhibit, circus fun including a "Sea Lion Splash," and a Mardi Gras Parade.
