Short Sands: One of Maine's Best Beaches

Short Sands Beach, in York Beach, Maine, might be small in size at a quarter mile long, but comes up big as a perfect Maine family beach. Framed by the famous rocky Maine coast on one side and spectacular Victorian homes on the other side, the low-key Short Sands Beach seems like your own travel discovery (even with crowds as well as a bowling alley (!) and arcade at the beach. As well could be expected, the Maine ocean water at Short Sands Beach is chilly for swimming (warmest at the end of August), so many people choose to be perfectly content sunning on the soft sand, taking walks, and just breathing in the salt fresh air. There's also a charming gazebo where concerts take place, a playground, and lots of York Beach shops, restaurants and the York Kingdom zoo/amusement park all within a few minute's walk.

Sunsets at Short Sands Beach can be spectacular, giving this beloved southern Maine beach another endearing personality. Whatever the time of the day (or season) for that matter, Short Sands Beach represents the best of Maine ocean beaches.

Remembering the Smiling Blue Whale Neon Sign at Yoken's Restaurant

Not that Yoken's "Thar She Blows" restaurant in Danvers, MA, was bad, but if it were in business today, we'd regard it as a New England tourist trap with too much fried food and dining rooms that looked like any other restaurant dining room. It was basically Howard Johnson's with a sea captain's hat. Yoken's was hugely popular at its Danvers and Portsmouth, NH, locations for its affordable and decent seafood dishes, friendly service and family-friendly environment. Perhaps it was most popular, however, for its attention-getting smiling blue whale neon sign. My Grandmother Had That...Antiques  in Wrentham, Mass., is one of those "hidden gem" antique stores that is jam-packed with antiques, collectibles and other items from the past. Located in a charming, two-story old red barn at 446 South St. (Route 1A), My Grandmother Had That...Antiques certainly lives up to its name. You'll find furniture, lamps, desks, chairs, plant holders, fine China sets and just about everything your grandma had, and also didn't have -- like a web address, Facebook fan page or any hint on the Internet that this place exists!
