Christmas by Candlelight, Old Sturbridge Village MA

If you dream of celebrating a traditional New England Christmas, then Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Mass., is probably the greatest travel gift of the local holiday season.

Set in an expansive 1830s New England living history museum, Christmas by Candlelight stays true to time warp form by sticking to authenticity. You'll experience sleigh rides, roasting chestnuts, gingerbread making, cider mulling, yule logs, holiday magic and puppet shows, a display of a miniature New England village, and  Christmas carol sing-a-longs and Victorian Carolers. Of course, the kids will have a chance to meet Santa (not the mall kind, more true-to-life), -- he will even perform readings of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. OK, Rudolph and The Grinch are not from the 1830s, but the spirit of Santa reading classics is timeless!

The Old Sturbridge 2014 Christmas by Candlelight takes place 4-9 p.m., Friday Saturday and Sunday evenings, Dec. 5-7, Dec. 12-14, and Dec. 19-21. For more information on this classic New England event, log onto the Old Sturbridge Village web site.

This is an fantastic family event for celebrating the holidays! Its everything and old fashioned holiday should be. Simple, sharing, caroling by the fire and on the sleigh ride, hot chocolate and cookies. Its a beautiful atmosphere with all the candles and the twinkle lights throughout the village. Our family has many memories of this venue! I would highly recommend it!

Remembering the Smiling Blue Whale Neon Sign at Yoken's Restaurant

Not that Yoken's "Thar She Blows" restaurant in Danvers, MA, was bad, but if it were in business today, we'd regard it as a New England tourist trap with too much fried food and dining rooms that looked like any other restaurant dining room. It was basically Howard Johnson's with a sea captain's hat. Yoken's was hugely popular at its Danvers and Portsmouth, NH, locations for its affordable and decent seafood dishes, friendly service and family-friendly environment. Located in a charming, two-story old red barn at 446 South St. (Route 1A), My Grandmother Had That...Antiques certainly lives up to its name. You'll find furniture, lamps, desks, chairs, plant holders, fine China sets and just about everything your grandma had, and also didn't have -- like a web address, Facebook fan page or any hint on the Internet that this place exists!
