Nubble Lighthouse: A Classic New England Travel Destination

Image
Article and photo by Eric H. Nubble Lighthouse at Cape Neddick, Maine, majestically stands as one of New England's great lighthouses -- noteworthy, as many lighthouses in the region exemplify true coastal architectural beauty. Perhaps it's just one of those "you just have to be there" situations, but in our attempt to best describe, Nubble Light is wonderfully maintained and perfectly situated with stunning, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The "Down east" salt-sea air, the renowned rocky Maine coast, the small Sohier Park with true "wide screen" views, and adjacent Fox's Lobster House restaurant -- with lobster, an ice cream stand (with amazing wild Maine blueberry ice cream) and picnic benches, help make this area a "must-visit" destination during your New England travels. We love visiting Nubble Lighthouse during the summer for its refreshing breezes, the fall for some peace and quiet from tourists, the winter when Nubble...

Lighting of the Nubble Lighthouse Christmas Event, York Beach, Maine

Image
The lighting of the Nubble Lighthouse in York Beach, Maine, truly shines like a beacon during the Christmas season. The friendly Parks and Recreation folks up in York have taken one of New England's greatest lighthouses and made it even better. The lights really define the beautiful shape of the lighthouse while the frigid Maine air almost seems to warm up to the incredible illumination. The 2014 Lighting of the Nubble takes place on Sat., Nov. 29, at 5 p.m. Holiday music entertainment, Santa, cookies and hot chocolate are traditionally part of this classic New England Christmas season event. Log onto Nubble Light web site for updates on the 2014 Lighting of the Nubble. Or call 207-363-1040 for more information.

Coastal New England during the Fall Season

Nubble Lighthouse in the early evening -- amazing! (photo by Eric) Don't forget about coastal New England during the fall season! We tend to think of the mountains in New England as the place to take in the fall colors of New England. It's true that you'll get a higher concentration of fall foliage in these regions. We find, however, that visiting places like southern Maine during the fall makes for just as fun of a time. The summer crowds lessen greatly and many of the shops and restaurants are still open for the season. If you're lucky, you'll catch a fall harvest event, thus adding to the overall grand feeling of being by the coast. Virtually empty Short Sands Beach (photo by Eric) We love York Beach, Maine, during the fall. On a good weather day, it's nice walking Short Sands Beach or Long Sands Beach and virtually having the beach to yourself. Or sitting on the rocky coast and gazing at Nubble Lighthouse -- one of America's most photographed l...
